Transparent film dressings protect partial-thickness wounds or provide a cover dressing over a primary dressing. They are indicated for partial thickness wounds and can be changed as often as daily.

Transparent film dressings, or transparencies, are wound dressings that provide a moist and healing environment for wounds. These dressings are membranes made out of different polymers and have an adhesive side. They come in varying thicknesses but are ideally ultra-thin. These dressings can be used as primary or secondary dressings and are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
Transparencies do not allow liquid or bacteria to pass through the dressing but they allow moisture vapor and air into the wound. This allows them to maintain a moist and sterile environment to promote debridement while protecting the wound.
These wound dressings are durable and flexible making them ideal for partial-thickness wounds with little or no exudate and wounds with necrosis Transparent film dressings may also be used to cover IV sites, catheters, lacerations, abrasions, and second-degree burns.
The transparent dressing is beneficial because it allows visualization of the wound without having to remove the dressing. They are usually made of polyurethane so many varieties are safe for patients with latex sensitivities or allergies.
