Benefits of Hydrocolloid Dressings
Hydrocolloid dressings are wafer dressings that contain gel-forming agents. The gel-forming agents are attached to a waterproof outer layer. The outer layer is often made out of polyurethane. They are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and thicknesses. Hydrocolloid dressings are available with and without an adhesive border.
Hydrocolloids provide a moist and insulated healing environment that can protect wounds while allowing the body’s natural enzymes to help heal the wounds. The dressing molds around the wound to insulate it so that the body doesn’t have to use as much energy to heal the wound.
These dressings are made for wound areas that are typically difficult to dress, such as elbows and heels. Hydrocolloids are patient-friendly because they don’t need to be changed as often as other wound dressings and they’re easy to apply.
Hydrocolloid dressings are indicated for wounds that are:
- Clean and uninfected
- Partial to full-thickness
- Dry with light to moderate drainage
- Free of dirt or other debris
They are also appropriate dressings to use as protective layers for wounds that are partially healed or recently healed because they are flexible and water-resistant.
