Foam dressings provide absorption and padding and are indicated for full-thickness wounds with moderate to heavy drainage. They come in bordered and non-bordered versions and can be used as a primary or secondary dressing. Foams are typically covered as a 3x/Week dressing change.

Foam dressings are a commonly used type of wound dressing because they are easy to apply and remove. This type of wound dressing is usually made of a material called semi-permeable polyurethane. They don’t adhere to wounds and keep out contaminants like bacteria. However, foam dressings allow water vapor in, creating a moist environment that promotes wound healing. Foam dressings can be used whether or not the wound is infected and are safe to use during compression therapy.

A foam dressing may or may not have a waterproof outer layer. Many varieties of foam dressing have adhesive borders and they come in a variety of sizes. Foam dressings are used for many different types of wounds including:

  • Lacerations
  • Abrasions
  • Incisions
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Infected wounds
  • Draining wounds
