Contact layer dressings are thin sheets made out of non-adherent materials that are placed on an open wound to protect healing tissue from direct contact with other materials that may be applied to the wound.

They can be made of woven or nonwoven materials. Often they are made from polyurethane film and silicone gel. This makes them a good choice for people with latex sensitivities or other allergies. These wound dressings conform to the shape of a wound and prevent outer dressings from sticking to the healing tissue.

They are designed to be non-adherent and skin field to promote healing, especially in wounds where the surrounding tissue is fragile. They can be used as the primary dressing or covered with a secondary dressing for greater absorption.

Contact layers should be used on clean wounds without necrotic tissue. Contact layer dressings are best for moderate to heavily exuding wounds. They may be perforated or permeable so they allow exudates to pass into the secondary dressing layers.

These dressings can be used with topical medications. Deep wounds may also require packing gauze in addition to a contact layer to properly fit the dressing to the wound bed.
